Peer Reviews

Edited

Peer Reviews (previously Publons now part of the Web of Science) is a platform that allows researchers to track, verify, and showcase their peer review and editorial contributions. Altmetric tracks mentions of research outputs on to provide visibility into the post-publication peer review process.

How does Altmetric track Peer Reviews?

Altmetric monitors the platform for reviews that are linked to a specific research output using a unique identifier, such as a DOI.

When a reviewer submits a review and it is made public (depending on the privacy settings of the journal and the reviewer), Altmetric picks up this activity. We specifically look for:

  • Post-publication reviews: Reviews written after an article has been published.

  • Links to scholarly outputs: Mentions that include a direct link or a DOI that allows our system to match the review to the correct paper.

How do Peer Reviews mentions appear in Altmetric data?

When a research output receives a mention on Publons, it is represented by a light grey color in the Altmetric Donut.

On the Altmetric Details Page, you will see a dedicated "Peer Reviews" tab. Clicking on this tab will show you:

  • The name of the reviewer (if the review is not anonymous).

  • A snippet or a link to the original review on the platform.

  • The date the review was published.

Important Note on Broken Links

You may occasionally notice that some links to Peer Reviews on the Altmetric Details Page appear to be broken or lead to a "page not found" error.

This is typically due to a change in the API settings and data policy structure used to collect these mentions following the integration of Publons into the Web of Science ecosystem.
