Altmetric MCP server

Altmetric now has an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, which allows AI tools to connect directly to Altmetric data. This means you can use AI assistants such as Claude Desktop, VS Code, and Cursor to query Altmetric data without leaving your AI tool of choice.

Through this integration, AI tools can retrieve attention scores and mention counts for research outputs, search across the Altmetric database, and filter results by source type or time period. You can look up research outputs using identifiers like DOIs, PubMed IDs, or arXiv IDs.

The MCP server connects to two Altmetric APIs: the Details Page API and the Explorer API. Depending on which API access you have, you may be able to query different types of data. Note that this is a developer-level feature and requires some technical setup, including API credentials.
