Seminars
Seminar content tracking
Altmetric tracks mentions of published research made in seminars, through a partnership with Cassyni, a platform for hosting and organising research seminars.
Seminars are where new research gets discussed, questioned and put in context by other researchers, often before that discussion shows up anywhere else online. When a Cassyni seminar references a research output, we add that mention to the output's Altmetric Details Page, giving researchers, institutions and publishers visibility into this early, expert-level engagement with their work.
Cassyni seminars themselves also become trackable research outputs. Each seminar has its own DOI, so a seminar that gets attention from a source we track (for example, if it's shared on X or discussed in a blog) will get its own Altmetric Attention Score and badge.
How does Altmetric track seminar mentions?
We receive seminar data directly from Cassyni. Each seminar includes a list of references, which are the research outputs mentioned or discussed during the talk. When a reference includes a DOI (or another scholarly identifier we support), we're able to match it to a research output and create a mention.
A few things to note about how this works:
We only track mentions included in the written references list of a seminar. We do not mine the audio, video or transcript of the talk itself.
Only seminars that have already taken place are tracked. Seminars with a scheduled date in the future are not included, even if their page and references are visible on Cassyni before the seminar happens.
New seminar mentions are processed as they come in, and are usually available to users the next day.
How do seminar mentions contribute to the Altmetric Attention Score?
Seminar mentions add a flat score of 3 to a research output's Altmetric Attention Score, for each seminar series that mentions it.
A seminar is an individual talk. A seminar series is the collection it belongs to on Cassyni, similar to how a blog post relates to the blog it's published on, or a podcast episode relates to the podcast it's part of.
This means that if the same research output is mentioned in two different seminars that are part of the same series, it will only contribute 3 to the score. If it's mentioned in seminars from two different series, it will contribute 6.
Note: Sentiment Analysis is not available for seminar mentions. At the moment, Sentiment Analysis only covers posts from X and Bluesky.
Where can I see seminar mentions?
In the Altmetric Explorer
In the Altmetric Explorer, seminar mentions appear as part of the attention breakdown on the Highlights tab, under 'Academic sources'. You can also sort, filter and export seminar mentions from the Research Outputs, Timeline, Mentions and Mention Sources tabs, just like any other attention source.
On an Altmetric Details Page
Seminar mentions appear in the attention timeline and contribute to the Altmetric Score, alongside the other sources tracked for the output.
Seminars as research outputs
Because each Cassyni seminar has its own DOI, a seminar can also have its own Altmetric Details Page, Attention Score and badge, once it receives attention from a source we track.
