FAQ: How does Altmetric show retracted outputs?

Edited

Altmetric flags research outputs that have been retracted or have an Expression of Concern (EoC). The flags appear in the Explorer, on Details Pages and in Altmetric Badges.

What is a retraction and what is an Expression of Concern?

A retraction means a publisher has formally withdrawn an output.

An Expression of Concern is a notice from a publisher saying there are concerns about an output, while the investigation is still ongoing or the issue has not been resolved.

Where does the information come from?

From Dimensions. The flags in Altmetric work in the same way as the ones you see in the Dimensions platform.

Where can I see the flags in the Explorer?

  • Altmetric Explorer: a red “Retracted” flag appears next to the output title on the Highlights, Research Outputs, Mentions and Mention Sources tabs.

  • Shareable reports: the same red flag appears next to the output title within the reports.

  • Details Pages: a flag appears below the donut and an expandable banner appears at the top of the page. It is red for retractions and orange for an EoC with no retraction.

    • Details Page timelines: the retraction and EoC dates are marked on the Attention Over Time, Attention Score History and Mendeley readership timelines. This helps you see how much attention an output received before and after the notice.

  • Altmetric Badges: a retraction flag appears in the badge popover.

  • Altmetric APIs: available under the usual access rules.

  • Google BigQuery (GBQ): available under the usual access rules.

Who can see this information?

The flags and banners on Details Pages are visible to everyone, including visitors who are not logged in.

The dates on the Details Page timelines are only visible to paying Explorer subscribers.

The information is also available to all Explorer subscribers, in the Altmetric APIs and in Google BigQuery (GBQ), under the usual access rules.

Do I need to set anything up?

No. The flags and banners are part of the Explorer and the Details Pages you already use.

Why does an output not show a flag?

Altmetric uses the data provided by Dimensions. If an output is not marked as retracted or with an EoC in Dimensions, it will not be flagged in Altmetric. If you think the status of an output is wrong, you can check its record in Dimensions.
