We classify both social media accounts and news / blog sources into a number of categories.

News and blog sources are identified as being ‘mainstream’ or ‘highlights’ when the sources have an international profile, and are further classified by target audience. This process uses a blend of keywords and manual process, and is subject to ongoing review. Typical classifications include “Health and Wellbeing”, “Medical”, “Finance and Economics”, “Technology”.

Social media accounts are classified by a blend of keyword analysis and AI classification. Here, we analyse the public profiles of X accounts (with others to follow in 2025) and apply classifications to accounts. For example, we identify people who identify themselves as being ‘Health Care Professionals’, ‘Patients and Caregivers’ and who work in ‘Education and Research’.

Often these different profiles have different characteristics: ‘Education and Research’ accounts often focus on a broader range of scientific research than those mentioned by ‘Health Care Professionals’, whereas the latter are often more likely to higher virality, for example, they are often reposted at a higher rate than, for example, ‘Patients and Caregivers’.
