ISSN vs. ESSN

We are interested in learning some best practices for metadata to optimize Altmetric Scores for a series of articles held in an institutional repository (Digital Commons). The articles are being tracked through a research information management system (Symplectc Elements) and impact is measured using Altmetric. If there is only one field for the ISSN, should we use the print ISSN, or the ESSN for the electronic version? Most of our records just have ISSNs, but if we have a choice, which one is better?

Thanks!

Answer

HI Ellen,

Thanks for reaching out!

If you only have space for one in the record either ISSN or eISSN is fine as we should have both indexed.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Kind Regards,
